Grid of the Future: Is Distributed Control the Answer?
The aging U.S. electric grid was designed to be a passive, one-directional system delivering power generated at central power plants, via transmission and distribution networks to the end-user. The evolution of the grid faces significant challenges if it is to integrate and accept more energy from renewable generation and other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
ARPA-E is interested in disruptive technologies that enable increased integration of DERs by real-time adaptation while maintaining and possibly increasing grid reliability and reducing cost for customers with smart technologies. This talk will identify opportunities in developing next generation control technologies that will address these challenges and enable secure, stable, and reliable transmission and distribution of electrical power that maximize the capacity of today's grid infrastructure.
