Quantum Matter and Metrology far from Equilibrium

Abstract: Much of the power and potential of quantum mechanics remains concealed if one focuses solely on systems in thermal equilibrium. Indeed, many applications, such as quantum metrology, computing, and communication rely upon the production, preservation, and manipulation of systems that are far-from-equilibrium. However, predicting and understanding the dynamics of quantum information in such systems remains an essential open question. In this talk, I will begin by describing how the interplay between analytics, numerics and experiments can shed new light on prethermal phases of matter and emergent hydrodynamics. For the latter, I will describe an experimental platform based upon multiple species of coupled spin defects in diamond, where one can control the dimensionality, disorder and range of interactions. Finally, by integrating these same spin defects into diamond anvil cells, I will describe our recent efforts at imaging stress and magnetism across pressure-driven phase transitions.
