Introduction to Linked Lists; Supporting Students with Automated Feedback
Ethan Ordentlich,
Lecturer in Computer Science Department,
Computer Science,
University of Chicago, Illinois,
In a sample lesson, I will introduce nodes and linked lists in Java. We will build intuition for nodes and linked list semantics through analogies and examples, then compare them to arrays. This lecture is aimed at students in their second computer science course who otherwise have no experience.
At a vision talk, I will discuss the role of automated feedback throughout the curriculum. Automated grading is an important tool for evaluating the behavior of programming submissions and providing feedback to large numbers of students. We will compare feedback in introductory classes to feedback in advanced classes and discuss future directions for further integrating automated feedback mechanisms in teaching.
