Quantum simulation of particle collisions
Federica Surace, AWS Quantum Postdoctoral Scholar, CMT and Preskill Group,

Abstract: Simulating real-time evolution is a challenging problem in high-energy physics. Quantum simulators are promising tools for tackling this problem and studying dynamical phenomena, including, for example, the scattering of complex composite particles. In this talk, I will consider for definiteness a quantum Ising chain in a tilted magnetic field and I will show how in this model the elementary excitations are confined into composite particles (mesons). I will first provide a theoretical analysis of meson-meson scattering, with an exact solution to the problem in the regime of large Ising coupling J. I will then demonstrate a protocol to experimentally observe this phenomenon, showing that present-day quantum simulators can function as "linear particle accelerators", giving access to S-matrix measurements of elastic and inelastic meson collisions.
